Meet the New Assistant Principal at Liberty Intermediate

Ottumwa Community Schools is pleased to announce that Mr. Wade Van Vark has been named Assistant Principal at Liberty Intermediate School for the 2024-25 school year. Mr. Van Vark will be filling the position recently held by Mrs. Heather Platten, who be promoted to Principal at Liberty Intermediate, as Mr. Steve Zimmerman will transition to Principal at Fahrney Elementary.

Van Vark currently serves as the Curriculum & Work-Based Learning Coordinator at Sigourney Community School District. He began his career in education at Pella High School teaching math, then transitioned into an Instructional Coaching role, then the Dean of Students before moving his career to PCM, Norwalk, then Sigourney. His leadership experience includes proudly facilitating ISAP math and language arts proficiency levels from 65% to 76% and from 56% to 78% in three years.

Van Vark has spent twenty-five years in education, working in various capacities such as Dean of Students and Principal. "Mr. Wade Van Vark brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new role as Assistant Principal at Liberty," said Mike McGrory, Superintendent of Ottumwa Schools. "His proven commitment to student success makes him an excellent addition to our team. We are confident that Mr. Van Vark will continue to uphold the high standards of excellence at Ottumwa Schools."

I look forward to working with the students, staff, and community to make Ottumwa Schools the best in the state!

Van Vark is set to assume his new role as Assistant Principal of Liberty Intermediate School on July 1, 2024. This administrative announcement was board-approved on March 18, 2024.
