Belonging & School Culture

In partnership with students, staff, and the community, the Ottumwa Community School District is committed to providing a welcoming and supportive learning environment where every individual is valued and can succeed.

Ottumwa Community Schools is dedicated to maintaining a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment for every student. Please see our updated Anti-Bullying, Anti-Harassment, and Anti-Discrimination policies, as well as the statement issued by Superintendent Mr. McGrory.

Since 2000, Ottumwa has welcomed individuals from various backgrounds. These experiences prepare our students for life after graduation by reflecting the broader society. Exposure to a range of viewpoints and perspectives enriches the educational environment and enhances the effectiveness of our schools.

Today, Ottumwa serves families that speak more than 40 languages. In our interconnected world, students benefit from a global perspective, enabling them to interact effectively with all individuals, regardless of background.

The district is actively engaged in ongoing training and development opportunities for students and staff. Our current work is supported by the creation of an Advisory Committee that will meet three times a year to:

  • Discuss the district’s curriculum audits
  • Provide feedback on policies and procedures
  • Review state and federal guidelines and recommendations
  • Advise on educational matters
