First Grade – Communicable Disease

First-grade students in the Ottumwa School District will begin to receive instruction concerning Communicable Disease. For your information, the instructional topics are listed below:

Grade 1 Review of Disease

Second Grade – Communicable Disease

Second-grade students in the Ottumwa Community School District will be receiving instruction concerning Communicable Disease. For your information, the instructional topics are listed below:

AIDS Disease

  1. Caused by a virus
  2. Virus transmission:

  3. Not transmitted by touching, social kissing, coughing, sneezing, contact with silverware, water fountains, telephones, desks, toilet seats, swimming pools, gym floors, close contact in the classroom/bus, tears, doorknobs (cold virus can be spread by all of the above). 

Third Grade – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

Third-grade students in the Ottumwa Community School District will be receiving instruction concerning Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). For your information, the instructional topics are listed below:

Communicable Disease Control for AIDS

  1. Don’t share needles.
  2. Don’t get another’s blood in a sore or cut.
  3. Don’t share sharp objects that could have blood on them.

Fifth Grade – AIDS & Reproductive Systems

Fifth Grade – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

Fifth grade students in the Ottumwa School District will begin to receive instruction concerning Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The topics covered by the instruction are listed below:

Grade 5 Review of AIDS

Fluids that Host the AIDS Virus

  1. Blood liquids
  2. Semen
  3. Vaginal fluids
  4. Mother’s breast milk

Transmission by Parts of the Reproductive System

  1. Penis

  3. Breast/breast milk

Detection

  1. The virus may not be detectable for a period of time.
  2. It cannot be self-diagnosed.
  3. Prevention – abstinence, faithfulness in marriage

Sexual intercourse is not introduced or described as such. However, the focus of this unit is on recognizing and identifying reproductive system parts and seeing a relationship and purpose for these parts so that students can relate normal function to specific anatomy. 

 

Fifth Grade – Reproductive Systems

Fifth-grade students in the Ottumwa School District will begin a unit of instruction entitled, Reproductive Systems. This takes place during the spring semester. The goal of this unit is to assist students to be able to read and answer questions about the structure and function of the reproductive system. The unit topics are listed below:

Definition of Human Reproduction

Basic Structure and Function of the Reproductive System

  1. Pituitary gland and hormones
  2. Body changes during puberty
  3. Reproductive system:
    1. Anatomy and physiology of the female and male reproductive systems
  4. Male reproductive system
  5. Female reproductive system

Processes of Reproduction

  1. Menstruation
  2. Nocturnal emissions

Fertilization

  1. Deposit of sperm
  2. Conception
  3. Infertility

Pregnancy

  1. Terms: uterus, umbilical cord

Pregnancy Prevention

  1. Abstinence
  2. Peer pressure
  3. Self-esteem
  4. Good decision making

The words “sexual intercourse” are used as terminology to identify how fertilization takes place. There is no content or direct instruction on the mechanics of sexual intercourse in the fertilization process.
