Important Information on Virtual Learning Days
Dear OCSD Families,

As we anticipate incoming winter weather, we want to ensure you are prepared for possible Virtual Learning Days. In advance, your student will be sent home with either a learning packet or a district-issued device.

In the event of a school cancellation, you will be notified via our ParentSquare Urgent Alert system that the no-school day will become a Virtual Learning Day.

What is a Virtual Learning Day?
Per Iowa law, the Ottumwa Community School District (OCSD) is permitted to use up to five (5) virtual learning days (or 30 hours) per school year.

What to Expect on a Virtual Learning Day
  • Students will complete assigned learning activities at home.
  • Teachers will be available via email and Google Classroom (or Schoology for secondary students) from 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM to assist with questions.
  • Virtual learning assignments will be posted by 10:00 AM for grades 6-12.
  • Students will have two days after returning to school to complete their assignments.
  • Attendance will be based on the completion of assigned tasks.

Student Expectations
  • PK-2: Complete assigned packets and activities.
  • Grades 3-5: Complete assigned packets, access class websites if assigned, and communicate with teachers as needed.
  • Grades 6-12: Access Google Classroom or Schoology, complete assigned coursework, and engage in virtual learning activities.

Caregiver Guidance
  • Support students in accessing and completing their learning activities.
  • Communicate questions to teachers via email, Google Classroom, or ParentSquare.
  • If a student is unable to participate due to illness, please report the absence. Students marked absent will follow the school’s make-up work policy upon return.

If you have any questions, please contact your student’s teacher or principal via ParentSquare or email.

Thank you for your support in ensuring learning continues, even during inclement weather!
