Ottumwa ‘Gold Game’ in Support of Childhood Cancer

This year, the Ottumwa iJAG students are leading the initiative to raise both awareness and funds for children battling cancer. An apparel fundraiser, sold through pre-orders online will benefit the University of Iowa’s Pediatrics Oncology Department. iJAG students are also selling cardstock ribbons to create a display of support, with 100% of those proceeds to benefit families fighting cancer. 

Partnering with the Ottumwa High School Art Club, Main Street Donuts, and Kiwanis Committee, iJAG students will be selling chocolate chip cookies, funnel cakes, face painting, tattoos, and helping you "get gold" to show your support. Fundraising activities will be located close to the concessions on the home side of the football field on Friday, October 25. All proceeds will go toward the University of Iowa Hospital, Pediatric Oncology Department to help families battling childhood cancer with items such as fuel and other accrued bills. 

Before the Varsity game begins that Friday, there will be a brief presentation by three OHS iJAG students who have led this project, along with Representative Hans Wilz, Dr. David Dickens the Director of UofI Pediatric Oncology, and Helaina Hillyard. Helaina was diagnosed with leukemia at a young age and will share her journey with us. 

Fans are encouraged to wear gold in support of the cause to the football team's last scheduled home game on October 25. The Freshman team kicks off at 4:45 pm, followed by the Varsity game at 7:30 pm at Schafer Stadium.
