Gateway Receives Ottumwa Legacy Grant
Ottumwa Community School District – Bulldog Action Group $7,998 for transportation for low-income families
Gateway students applied for a Bright Ideas Grant because they wanted to be able to help families have transportation to local food pantries and laundromats in town. They also wanted pantries to have backpacks designated as "no utilities" for people who do not have a home or utilities on at their house. To accomplish this, they applied for the Bright Ideas Grant with Legacy. With the money, they will buy backpacks and purchase transportation vouchers from 10-15 Transit designated for approved addresses of local pantries and laundromats. Daisy Masaki has been the project's leader. Brooklyn Teno, Ava Robinson, Jose Oropeza-Lindner, and Keja Joseph collaborated on the project. Camille Durbin and Maleah Robbins will lead the project next year. The project stemmed from a class assignment that challenged students to make an impact on their school, neighborhood, or community.
